New year reformists may not need to join the gym after all, it seems, as the average commuter burns more than 320 calories a day getting to and from work.
A typical journey will see you tackle 16 stairs, walk for 12 minutes and stand for a further ten.
The energy spent is the equivalent to a chocolate bar or a jam doughnut, Virgin Active’s research claims.
Its head personal trainer, Hugh Hanley, said: ‘Things like taking the stairs instead of the lift or clenching your bum on your way to work can make a big difference.’
